In this podcast you will meet nature writer Michaela Vieser. She has written a piece about kelp specifically for Plant Life. Michaela will be taking us back in time, to the Victorian Era. Here we follow imagined events in the life of the historic Margaret Gatty*, a writer on British coastal marine ecosystems. In a fictional moment, Margaret Gatty has an Alice-in-Wonderland kind of experience…. The story will take us to Hastings, in the UK, and to the Canadian Pacific coast inhabited by the coast Salish people, places where kelp has been much appreciated for reasons of survival, aesthetics and belonging. Seaweed collecting was a popular pastime among those who had the means to escape the smoggy cities and travel to the coast. To encourage other women to take up the study of seaweed, Margaret wrote a handbook for amateurs.
